The Tax Return Preparer Scheme, 2006 requires TRPs to undergo formal training and obtain certification on a continuous basis. I take great pleasure in announcing that the government has agreed to launch refresher training for the first batch of the TRPs, which is now aligned with the revised TRP Scheme to include ITR1, ITR2, ITR4, Tax Deduction at Source (TDS), and Service Tax. The department is also in the process of amending the notification to allow candidates to work as a TRP even though they are drawing income under the head salary. The existing TRPs who have taken up salaried employment elsewhere can also undertake this refresher training.
In addition to increasing the scope of the training, DIT in alliance with its training partner NIIT, have revamped the training to use a more practical approach to teaching. It now offers a simulated environment for you to practice the end-to-end process of computing taxable income and tax thereof, filling out relevant forms, filing returns both manually and using software, and filling out disbursement details. Apart from legal aspects and procedures, the training equips you with the ways to generate leads and handle difficult situations and customers. These soft skills should go a long way in building and expanding your client base.
The training will be delivered by experts in the industry - you can seek their advice, address your concerns, and get answers to your questions. You could also use this training as forum to learn from your fellow TRPs and exchange tips and best practices. The bottom line is that this training is a platform for you to learn and grow and be independent!
The training is preceded by a 15 days self study period starting from 17th February 2009. The training curriculum is broken down into two modules, a) ITR/TDS and b) Service Tax. These are each 6-day training modules. The last day will be spent on demonstrating and practicing the e-filing procedures. At the end of each training module, you will be required to appear for a certification test, which must be cleared for you to renew your TRP license and continue as a TRP.
The 1st batch of ITR/TDS training module will be conducted from 4th March 2009 to 9th March 2009 and the second batch will be conducted from 13th Mar 2009 to 18th Mar 2009. The exam will be conducted on 20th Mar 2009. The registration for the training will start on 17th February at the respective NIIT centers. The dates for Service Tax will be announced shortly.
